History of South of India Kennel Club
The South of India Kennel Club under the auspicious of the KCI established at Ooty in 1927 by Col.Fletcher, catered to this need. All those who took their sojourn in the beautiful hill station, participated in the Dog Show, as part of the summer season. The patronage initially, Ex Patriats and Members of Indian Royal Families, finally percolating down to people of more modest means.
The Club grew from strength to strength and the dog shows extremely popular. In the 1950s they further expanded by holding Joint Shows at Coimbatore and Bangalore. In 1954 a Rabies outbreak in the Nilgirisposed a major problem. With the sterling stewardship of Mr.H.Gibbon, President and Secretary Mr.Sivaniser, the club revived with its 33rd. show showcasing 63 entries and 22 breeds.
The unique distinction of holding perhaps the only field trials for Gun dogs in South India was accomplished in 1957 and the show entries surged to 78. In 1958 Mrs. Beth Cooper joined the club and after her taking over as secretary in 1960, she steered the club into the National and the International Scene. The President portfolio passing fromMr. Gibbon to Major J.W.Lawrence who first introduced Obedience Test to India.
In 1965 Mrs.M.Turner took over the Secretary ship, which she held for 22 years and contributed immensely to the development of the club. In 1965 the entries stood at 104 dogs and 29 breeds. In 1968 the 45th. Championship Show, Judged by the President Mr.J.W.Lawrence, was the first to be televised in India. Mrs. Turner expired in 1991.
The untimely demise of Mr.J.W.Lawrence entailed that Mrs.Cooper become the President. She was confident of the Club's capacity and made a bid for the AKU show as early as 1984/1985.We are now honoured that her lead has come into fruition. In 1987 Mrs.Cooper attended the AKU once again. She continued as President till her demise in 1995.
Mr. D. Krishnamurthy , on the demise of Mrs. Cooper was unanimously called upon to assume the Office of President. His tenure took the Club to greater heights, culminating in the South of India Kennel Club being the Host for FCI Asia and The Pacific Section Show 2013 with Foreigndelegates & Panel of World Class Judges. Needless to say this put Ooty on the Global Canine map. Mr. D. Krishnamurthy, subsequently elected as Vice Chairman of The Asia Pacific====== , to devote undivided attention to this organization, regretfully demitted his position as President of the SIKC. The Incumbent President is now Mrs.Rajini Krishnamurthy, who has taken charge with renewed vigour .
